Pink Bollworm trial approved

Monday, May 19th 2008

The US Department of Agriculture Biotechnology Regulatory Service has granted a permit for the release of sterile pink bollworm containing a heritable, fluorescent marker on commercial cotton in Arizona for a large scale trial in the summer of 2008. The novel strain was developed in collaboration with Oxitec Ltd using Oxitec technology.  Up to 50 million genetically marked moths will be released on up to 2,550 acres over the cotton growing season. The moths have previously been tested in two seasons of cage studies and two previous smaller scale open field releases in Arizona with excellent results.
