2nd Intensive Workshop on Aedes Mosquitoes in Memory of Professor Chris Curtis

Thursday, July 3rd 2008

Oxitec and the WHO Collaborating Centre for Vectors based at the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) are conducting the “2nd Intensive Workshop on Wild Type and Genetically Modified Aedes Mosquitoes” following the success of last year’s workshop. This 7-day intensive workshop is taking place from 1st to 8th July 2008 in IMR’s campus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. IMR is the research arm of the Ministry of the Health Malaysia.
Lee Han Lim, Workshop’s Dean and Head of WHO Collaborating Centre for Vectors, said: “It is our hope that this event will now become a series of international meetings, and that the words ‘Aedes Mosquitoes’ will soon be replaced by ‘Arthropods’”. This year’s workshop has invited delegates from India, Malaysia, Thailand, UK, USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and has been convened in memory of Professor Chris Curtis of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) who passed away on 13th May 2008.
Workshop Convenor and Oxitec’s Head of Public Health S.S. Vasan said: “Chris could be considered the father of genetic control of arthropods, especially mosquitoes, so we dedicate this event to celebrate his outstanding life and achievements in medical entomology. I had the honour of interacting with him closely in the last couple of years. The scientific output from his group in Delhi (100+ papers) before he joined the LSHTM is truly mind boggling to go through, and many of his papers are still relevant for RIDL Sterile Insect Technique”.
