Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally friendly approach, based on thorough understanding of the biology of pests. IPM combines biological, cultural, physical and chemical tools to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with minimal risk to health and the environment. Growers around the world are increasingly adopting IPM practices.
Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an ideal fit into IPM because of its species-specificity and low environmental impact. Insect predators are left in the field to provide natural pest control and use of insecticides is reduced or eliminated. Oxitec is developing new technology which will allow SIT to be applied to a wider range of pests.
Oxitec has research and development programs in the following agricultural pests, and is collaborating with the USDA on fruit fly and Pink bollworm projects.
- Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata)
- Mexican fruit fly (Anastrepha ludens)
- Pink Bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella)
- Codling moth (Cydia pomonella)
