The Oxitec approach is targeted at a single species, so it dramatically reduces the environmental impact of population control; particularly in comparison to conventional insecticides or pesticides, which can harm many other insects in addition to the target species.
Sterile males created through irradiation in the traditional Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) are made weaker by the process. Oxitec males on the other hand don’t require irradiation, so remain fit and healthy. Oxitec males are healthy males and so can compete for wild females more effectively than irradiated insects.
Our solution offers the potential for a more effective solution to the damage caused by agricultural pests, and to do so in a manner which is sustainable, safe, and better for the environment.
