Our solution

Using advanced genetics Oxitec has developed a new and innovative solution to managing agricultural insect pests.

Through genetic modification rather than irradiation we create ‘sterile’ males of the target species. This approach harnesses fully the natural instincts of the male insects to find females in the wild. After an Oxitec insect has successfully mated with a wild female it’s offspring will not survive to adulthood (or, depending on the strain, only male offspring will survive).

Through the Oxitec Control Programme, the system by which Oxitec insects are released and monitored, the target insect population in that area can be dramatically reduced or even eliminated.
