Company History

Pre-history

  • Dr. Luke Alphey developed novel insect control technology at Oxford University (patented in 1999; published in Science magazine in 2000).

2002

  • Oxitec was founded, based on the above research of Dr. Luke Alphey, with an equity investment of £1.5 million from Oxford University and East Hill Advisors.

2003

2004

  • Transformation of Pink Bollworm.
  • Move to purpose-built laboratories and offices in Milton Park, near Oxford.

2005

  • Second round funding of £1.3 million raised from Oxford University (through the Isis College Fund), East Hill Advisors and Oxford Capital Partners.
  • Contained field trials of Pink Bollworm in the USA.
  • Transformation of the Mexican fruit fly.

2006

  • Transformation of codling moth.

  • Open field release of transgenic Pink Bollworm in USA.
