Oxitec on BBC Radio 4 Costing the Earth
The BBC’s radio programme Costing the Earth is a science based programme looking at man’s effect on the environment and how the planet reacts, questioning accepted truths, challenging those in charge and reporting on progress towards improving the world.
The programme tonight at 9pm UK time ‘adapting insects’ is presented by Professor Alice Roberts. It investigates how scientists at Oxitec are employing a new and innovative genetic approach to control insect pest populations. Professor Roberts explains how Oxitec’s unique RIDL products use genetically ‘sterile’ male insects, which seek out and mate with wild females and prevent them having offspring able to survive in the wild. Other approaches to combat insects that spread disease and damage crops are also featured and these include the work of Professor Steve Sinkins at Oxford University and Simon Leather at Imperial College London.
The programme can be found on the BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006r4wn
