Mosquitoes and Disease
Mosquitoes cause more human suffering than any other animal.
Over a million people die every year from diseases spread by mosquitoes, and many more are ill. Each year, there are 350-500 million cases of malaria and 50-100 million cases of dengue fever. Other mosquito borne diseases such as chikungunya, West Nile Fever and Eastern Equine Encephalitis are also increasing in importance. Different mosquito species are responsible for transmitting the different diseases. Several Anopheline species transmit malaria while two closely related Aedes species are responsible for spreading dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever.
