Luke Alphey Research Director
Dr Guoliang Fu Team Leader, Molecular
Biology
Guoliang gained his BSc at Beijing University, and his PhD at Moscow
State University, before going on to do post-doctorate assignments
at the University of Cambridge, Imperial College and in Singapore.
His work included studies of the molecular biology of Leishmania
and Trypanosoma and the immunology and genetic basis of susceptibility
to lupus in mammals.
Dr Derric Nimmo Head of Public Health Research
Since completing his PhD on drug resistance in Leishmania at Keele
University, Derric has gained broad research experience in molecular
biology, transformation technologies for insects and gene expression.
Before joining Oxitec he was working on the control of malaria through
expression of novel peptides in transgenic anopheline mosquitoes,
and he developed a site-specific integration system for mosquitoes.
Dr Tarig Dafa'alla Senior Scientist
After completing his MSc at the University of Khartoum, Tarig did
his PhD at the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen. He has since
studied in Italy and Denmark and held a post-doctoral and teaching
appointment at Giessen. His key research experience is in the molecular
basis of parasitology and immunology.
Dr Sarah Scaife Senior Scientist
After completing a BA at Oxford, Sarah did her PhD at the Wellcome
Trust Centre for Human Genetics, with post-doctoral fellowships
at the Dunn School of Pathology, Oxford, and the Yamanouchi Research
Institute. Her research experience includes disease gene expression
analysis and a wide range of molecular biology and tissue culture
techniques.
Dr Andrew McKemey Technical Development Manager
Andrew has a BSc. from Bath in Applied Biology, an MSc. in crop
protection from the University of Bristol and a PhD in Invertebrate
Ecology from the University of Cardiff. He joined Oxitec from Insect
Investigations Ltd. in Cardiff, where he was Head of Field Studies.
There he was responsible for running contract research insect
control trials including efficacy and regulatory studies.
Dr Martha Koukidou Senior Scientist
Martha has a PhD in Molecular Biology and
Biomedicine from IMBB-FORTH, Crete, and an MSc in Biological and
Biochemical Sciences from the University of Essex, UK. Most recently
she has been working on application of the Sterile Insect Technique
on the olive fly Bactrocera oleae. She has extensive experience in a
wide range of molecular biology, tissue culture, microscopy and
insect handling techniques.
Dr Neil Morrison Senior Scientist
After completing his BSc in Medical Microbiology at the University of Edinburgh, Neil commenced a PhD at Oxford University, aiming to apply Oxitec’s transgenic technologies to the control of pink bollworm. During this time, Neil worked closely with the US Department of Agriculture on pink bollworm strains, and with the International Atomic Agency in Austria, where he studied mass-rearing of transgenic medfly. After completion of his PhD, Neil took up his current role: heading up Oxitec’s research into the control of pink bollworm and other moth species.
