Oxitec in the US
Oxitec is working to bring our sustainable, targeted solution to impact to communities threatened by Aedes aegypti across the United States and has applied for a product registration for its non-biting male mosquitoes with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Innovative solutions to fight disease-spreading mosquitoes have never been more needed. Climate change is spreading dengue risk across the country, and reported cases of vector-borne diseases in the United States have more than tripled since 2004, with 2024 the worst year on record for dengue cases.
To help address this challenge, Oxitec has been working in partnership with the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District since 2011. Three pilot seasons conducted in Florida Keys communities have now concluded, and we have demonstrated that Oxitec non-biting, male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes perform well in the field, can reduce the local abundance of the invasive Aedes aegypti mosquito, and have enabled the optimization of just-add-water egg release devices.
